Once you get accustomed to each card on its own, you are ready to start learning how to read them in a spread. Most Tarot Card readers are familiar with the Celtic Cross Spread, but a three card basic spread is a good way to learn how to read cards for beginners.
Even before you start to use a three card spread; there is a good exercise you can do daily.
Its purpose is to familiarize yourself with the cards and the idea of reading them. It is easy to do and will strengthen your abilities when it comes to reading cards in general.
What you do is you shuffle and pull one card a day to see what your day will be like. Based on the card you pull you give yourself a reading with that card. Analyze what that card will mean to you that day. This is an excellent way to get familiar with the cards and their meanings. It also helps you develop your sense of intuition which is also very important for reading the Tarot Deck.
How to do a tarot Three Card Reading:
Step 1: Set the Intention
Begin by focusing on the question or situation you want insights about. Take a moment to center yourself and set a clear intention for the reading. This will help you establish a connection with the cards and the energy surrounding your query.
Step 2: Shuffle Your Cards
Shuffle the tarot deck while concentrating on your question. You can shuffle the cards in whatever way feels comfortable to you—overhand shuffle, riffle shuffle, or any other method. As you shuffle, think about your question and the guidance you seek. Many people will also cut the deck into three or four stacks before choosing a card.
Step 3: Draw Three Cards
From the shuffled deck, draw three cards and place them face down in a row from left to right. These three cards will represent the past, present, and future aspects of your question or situation.
Step 4: Reveal and Interpret the Cards
Now, turn over the first card (leftmost) and interpret its meaning in relation to your question. This card represents the past influences or factors related to your query.
This is the past in relation to the question you asked. Keep in mind the past could be the day before or even the night before. It doesn’t mean years ago necessarily based on what you asked. This card connects you to the present situation or middle card.
Next, reveal and interpret the second card (middle) as it relates to your present circumstances or the current situation.
Finally, reveal and interpret the third card (rightmost) in the context of the future or the potential outcome of your question. This is the future or outcome position to the question. Keep in mind that the future could mean later that day. It doesn’t necessarily mean a year from now.
Step 5: Synthesize the Reading
Take a moment to consider how the three cards interact and relate to each other.
Look for patterns, contrasts, and connections between the cards. Internalize the information from each card to form a cohesive narrative that addresses your question or situation. Look for the story, it might not be immediately obvious.
If the cards aren’t making sense, begin to describe the symbols of each card, stay open, describe what the symbols mean to you, and check your references if need be.
There are no gold stars for remembering everything and over time the cards will stick with you. Some better than others.
Over time you might even have cards you prefer and some you are not always happy to encounter. Your relationship and interpretations of the cards can change over time as well. You may read an interpretation from another reader that opens your mind and helps you see a card in a new light.
Step 6: Reflect and Act
Reflect on the insights you’ve gained from the three-card spread.
