The Moon

The Moon

Rider Waite Tarot The Moon

The Moon card in the Tarot serves as a reminder to trust one’s instincts, explore the mysteries within, and accept that life’s journey may not always be straightforward. By tapping into our intuition, imagination and subconscious mind, we can better understand ourselves and navigate through life’s uncertainties with clarity and grace. Why are we afraid of the dark?

It is associated with emotions, dreams, and the ebb and flow of life’s cycles. The Moon card often serves as a reminder that not everything is as it seems on the surface. It encourages us  to look beyond the surface and explore our hidden emotions and desires. Sometimes we are so lost in the dark, we cannot see any path ahead.

It is helpful to notice when you have a stronger reaction to something, a person, an event, a thought, and then to be curious about what about that “thing” did you react to. Learn to notice your responses both physical and emotional, and to ask why they trigger a certain reaction.

The Moon represents the realm of the unconscious mind and the exploration of the shadow self. It symbolizes hidden emotions, fears, and desires that may be influencing one’s thoughts and reactions, and choices. Those fears may be hidden from us with multiple layers of our “old narratives.” It will take work to uncover our true motivations.

Symbolism

We are using the Rider–Waite Tarot for this analysis. This deck is the most used world-wide and is highly recommended for those starting out with Tarot.

The Moon: The central figure of the card is the moon itself, shining brightly in the night sky. The moon is a symbol of feminine energy, intuition, and the unconscious mind. It represents the mysterious and hidden aspects of life that are yet to be revealed.

Moon phases: The Moon card usually depicts the various phases of the moon—full moon, crescent moon, and waning moon. These phases signify the cyclical nature of life, with its ups and downs. They also represent the ever-changing emotions and the shifting tides of the subconscious mind.

Two Pillars: On many Moon cards, you can see two pillars or towers in the background. These pillars symbolize the gateway between the conscious and the subconscious realms. The Moon is the bridge between these two states of awareness, inviting the seeker to explore the depths of their psyche.

Water: The pool of water in the foreground represents the subconscious mind and the realm of emotions. The reflection in the water suggests that things may not always be what they seem, and the seeker is encouraged to trust their intuition and explore what lies beneath the surface.

Animals: Often, the Moon card features a dog and a wolf, howling at the moon. The dog represents the domesticated, conscious mind, while the wolf symbolizes our primal instincts and wild nature. These animals show the duality within us, calling for a balance between our rational thoughts and our deep-rooted emotions.

Crayfish: Emerging from the water, a crayfish is seen on some Moon cards, symbolizing the process of shedding old beliefs, fears, and patterns. This creature is associated with the idea of transformation and the need to confront subconscious fears to progress in life.
